“The Police of the Republic of Mozambique was told during the past week that at least three youths formerly belonging to the group of insurgents active in the area had left the forests of Cabo Delgado to hand themselves in to authorities in the city of Pemba, following a statement by the President of the Republic on an amnesty,” a report by Noticia da Defesa reads. Efforts are currently underway to ensure that they return safely to their place of origin in Memba district, Nampula province.
According to sources within the police who spoke to Notícias de Defesa, the young people each had more than three million meticais (in various formats) in bounty; many of the young people in the bush do not know the cause of the war, but are solicited with sums of money to create instability in the region.
Some sources in Cabo Delgado say that the first case of insurgents defecting in the province related to the teacher of Angoche-Nametoria, and this second case confirms to a certain extent that insurgents are currently experiencing dejection and want because of logistics, which some respond to by acting on their own account, while others seek ways to abandon the insurgency altogether.
The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence and Security Forces during Heroes’ Day celebrations said the young people in the forests of Cabo Delgado creating instability and looting assets were delaying the development of the country, urging them to re- join society and abandon their mission, and promising that forgiveness would be granted.
This comes at a time when the government has been developing various strategies to end the insecurity in Cabo Delgado and the centre of the country.
