A customs broker in the city of Pemba and a teacher in Meluco district in Cabo Delgado have been arrested by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) for allegedly attempting to sell ivory tusks.
“The customs broker was detained while looking for a buyer. When questioned, he claimed that the ivory was not his, but that it belonged to a teacher in the district of Meluco,” SERNIC spokesperson Noémia João explained.
Both detainees in fact admit to being intermediaries, but deny being the owners of the tusks.
João said the arrests were made possible through information submitted via the institution’s operating lines.
If their involvement is proven, the pair could face between 12 to 16 years in jail, and a corresponding fine, for the crime of killing and trafficking protected or prohibited species.
