Cabo Delgado: Religious sects may be fuelling terrorism – Chief of Police

Mozambican chief of police Bernardino Rafael says that some religious sects may be fuelling terrorism in the country and asks the Christian Council of Mozambique to be aware of these organisations.

The General Commander of the Police of Mozambique says he finds it strange that religious sects appear all over the country, acting in almost the same way, citing as an example the group recently discovered in the forests of Angónia district in Tete province.

The behaviour of these sects “leads us to suspect that they have some connection with terrorism in Cabo Delgado,” he said.

Quissanga free from terrorism

On the other hand, Bernardino Rafael appealed to people who fled the war in Quissanga district to return to their areas of origin, as security in that area had now been restored.

“I think the population of Quissanga can go home, because Quissanga is free from terrorism. It is true that some access roads still need rehabilitation, but it is not impossible to reach Quissanga,” Rafael said.

The ambassador of the European Union in Mozambique, António Sanchez Gaspar, gave guarantees of support to the Mozambican authorities in assisting displaced people who want to return to their homes.

This week, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force deployed to Cabo Delgado to help the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDSM) in the fight against insurgents announced the opening of the road between Pemba, the provincial capital, and Macomia.

Roads were also opened between Mueda and Awasse and Nangade, allowing the restoration of “public trust” in the population.
