Almost half the cashew nuts produced in Cabo Delgado’s Nangade district are illegally exported to Tanzania, where buyers will allegedly pay far more than in Mozambique.
“Six thousand tons of cashews have been going to Tanzania illegally. That’s a very large number,” said Abdul Bacar, a cashew producer from Nangade.
The situation is known to the government, which says it is taking steps to address the issue.
Located in the north of Cabo Delgado, Nangade district is the province’s largest cashew producing area, harvesting about 15,000 tons annually.
