A hitherto unknown group of individuals has been terrorizing the population of Chiure district village, in southern Cabo Delgado province, robbing families and economic agents in the dead of night.
Spokesperson for the Provincial Police Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Cabo Delgado, Mário Adolfo, said that four members of the gang had been arrested, while others were still on the run.
“Some of the members of this gang are already in the hands of the judicial authorities. Other members are still on the run, but work is being done together with other districts. In the spotlight is the district of Montepuez, because information indicates that many of them (members of the gang) fled there. There is still work to be done neutralising all the members of this gang, which has been terrorising the district of Chiure,” Adolfo said.
“To date, I cannot specify the exact number of members of the gang, but the number of detainees is already considerable,” he continued.
According to the PRM, the four accused are not terrorists, but simply robbers sowing panic within the community.
The PRM also announced that six citizens, all Mozambicans, had been arrested for stealing, in the case of two, electrical appliances, two for theft of buckets, and two for stealing various items including a motorcycle from a healer in Ocua administrative, Chiure district.
Police in Chiure have shown good operational results since the replacement about a month ago of the district commander, having seized diverse stolen goods and neutralised various individuals violating public tranquillity in the area.
