The president of Frelimo Filipe Nyusi announced on Sunday that veterans of the national liberation struggle, who make up the “Local Force”, killed a group of terrorists at an Administrative Post in Cabo Delgado on March 29.
This Monday saw the start of the sixth National Conference of the Association of Combatants in the Liberation Struggle (ACLLIN), at which the association’s new governing bodies will be elected.
Yesterday, the ACLLIN National Committee met in its fourth ordinary session, to prepare the documents to be considered.
At the event, Filipe Nyusi highlighted the role of national liberation struggle veterans in the fight against terrorism, through a local force made up of veterans and other members of the Cabo Delgado communities.
The force, created at the request of the members themselves, has had undeniable results on the ground, Nyusi said.
“The role of this local force has been vital in guiding the young people of the Defence and Security Forces and in foiling enemy action,” said Nyusi. The force’s involvement had resulted in the elimination of “a considerable number of terrorists” and the capture of “various types of weapons, including bazookas, rockets and AKMs in an action carried out by veterans of the liberation struggle”.
Filipe Nyusi further revealed that the incident alluded to occurred on the 29th of March in Makiu, in the region of Nabungali, Ngapa administrative post, Mueda district.
This is not the first announcement of local forces’ involvement in the killing of terrorists. Similar announcements came in January and February of this year.
