Ten members the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) were killed last week in three raids by insurgents in villages of Haia, Mítacata and the Quiterajo Administrative Post headquarters vallage in Macomia district, Cabo Delgado province, ‘Carta de Moçambique’ reports today.
Sources told ‘Carta’ that the attacks on the FDS positions all took place at about 7:00 p.m. ro 7:30 p.m. last Wednesday night, and were carried out by an unknown number of men split into three groups.
During the attack, the insurgents burned down the local health centre and the military control post. Details of the three attacks, on targets only an estimated 1 km apart, are still scarce, but images circulating social media show burned police cars and armoured vehicles near an FDS camp.
‘Carta’ also says that the insurgents burned, stole or vandalised most of the assets of the Mítacata residents before attacking the FDS positions.
According to the ‘Carta’ sources, the insurgents seized a vehicle belonging to a local merchant and then collected various food products before setting fire to all the houses in Quiterajo village.
Ten war displaced die in wreck
On Friday, following the attacks, at least 10 residents of the Mítacata coastal district lost their lives when a boat they were using to escape the area sank in the Indian Ocean between the Quiterajo Administrative Post and Mocimboa da Praia. It is not known how many people were on the boat, but it is suspected that the vessel capsized due to overloading.
Sources report that two bodies have been found near Ulo beach in Mocímboa da Praia and have already been buried. Attempts to contact authorities in Cabo Delgado about the matter failed.

The attacks against the UIR camps in #Macomia is finally confirmed – seven days after the fact. A worrying development which indicates the insurgents are not just opportunistic “bandits” anymore… pic.twitter.com/EvVSiOTFMo
