Graça Machel, President of the Foundation for Community Development (FDC) and global human rights activist, says that accommodation centres for those displaced by the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado should become places of social transformation.
“We have people who are there sitting there, 24 hours a day. Let us transform [this situation]. If they are children, we have to do something to make them active. If they are teenagers, they have to be active. Young people and women have to be active; to learn, so they leave the accommodation centre with more knowledge than when they first got there. So that they can restart their lives at a higher level than they had before entering,” she said.
Once the accommodation centres become centres of social transformation, they could be used to transfer knowledge and skills, Graça Machel told journalists this Wednesday at the end of a meeting with civil society organisations in the city of Pemba.
The former Minister of Education of Mozambique on Wednesday completed a three-day visit to the province of Cabo Delgado, where she visited accommodation centres and the homes of families hosting displaced people in the Metuge and Chiúre districts.
