The governor of Cabo Delgado, Valige Tauabo, on Thursday asked businesspeople to return to districts formerly affected by armed violence in the northern province, noting that conditions for resuming economic activities are now in place.
“Conditions to carry out economic activities do persist. We continue to invite businesspeople and investors to make the best use of this moment to resume their activities,” said Tauabo, quoted by Radio Mozambique.
Tauabo asks businesspeople to give a vote of confidence to the progress made by the Defence and Security Forces combating armed attacks in Cabo Delgado.
“The population returned voluntarily and has already settled in almost every district [affected by the insurgency]. At this moment, we can say that at least 65% of the population is back in their districts,” the governor added.
The province of Cabo Delgado has been facing armed insurgency for almost six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State. Attacks there since October 2017 have conditioned the advance of natural gas production projects in the region.
The conflict in northern Mozambique has displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and killed around 4,000, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, while the Mozambican president has acknowledged “more than 2,000” fatalities.
