About 200 fishermen from the province of Cabo Delgado who lost their fishing tacking in Cyclone Kenneth have returned to the sea more than a year later.
Ataje Saido is one of the approximately 3,000 fishermen affected by the calamity. He lost several canoes, two boats and diverse fishing equipment, and his return to work was only possible with the support he received under the Resilience Mechanisms programme.
“During Cyclone Kenneth, I lost my canoes, boats and several fishing nets, and I stopped for a long time. But today, after receiving fishing equipment, including an engine, I went back to fishing,” the fisherman from Metuge said.
Ncado Rando, another fisherman affected by Kenneth and beneficiary of the Cabo Delgado fishermen’s livelihoods recovery programme, said: “The new equipment we received, especially the engine, will help us to fish on the high seas and increase production.”
Budgeted at around 20 million meticais, the Resilience Mechanisms project is supported by several entities, including the European Union and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It is implemented by the Cabo Delgado Local Economic Development Agency [Agência Desenvolvimento Económico Local de Cabo Delgado] .
“This project covers the city of Pemba and the district of Metuge, where we are supporting around 200 fishermen who are part of 13 associations, who, in addition to receiving fishing nets, hooks and engines for vessels, underwent training in the use of the equipment and in sustainable fishing techniques,” explained António Carlos Dias, Director of the Cabo Delgado Local Economic Development Agency.
During the passage of Cyclone Kenneth, dozens of boats were destroyed and many others washed out to sea and sunk.
