The Maputo-Katembe bridge connecting two shores of the Mozambican capital’s bay was out of electricity for several hours between Monday night and early today due to theft of cables from the project’s electrical system.
Mozambican Electricity (EDM) spokesman Luís Amado told state broadcaster Rádio Moçambique that unknown people stole medium voltage cables that supply power to the bridge, leaving the facility in darkness.
Amado said the robbery caused damage estimated at one million meticais (14,200 euros), but power was restored by EDM technicians.
The spokesman for the public utility company deplored the situation, warning of the risks to motorists who had to cross the bridge in complete darkness.
The Maputo-Katembe bridge was inaugurated on November 10 and is one of the most expensive infrastructure built after Mozambique’s independence, costing US$ 785 million.
The infrastructure was financed and built by China and includes 200 kilometers of roads.
