A Mozambican businessman of Indian origin was kidnapped yesterday in the centre of Chimoio city, capital of Manica province, in central Mozambique, witnesses have told Lusa.
Yassin Answar, who is associated with the Moçambique Comercial chain, was kidnapped at around 7:00 p.m. as he was driving home in Rua Sussundenga, in the centre of Chimoio.
Witness Amélia Julião said the kidnappers fired at least 10 shots to intimidate the businessman, forcing him to abandon his vehicle.
“They forced the businessman out of his vehicle and kidnapped him,” she told Lusa.
Paulina Estevão, who lives on the street where the abduction took place and also witnessed the scene, told Lusa that “it looked like a fight at first” between the kidnappers and the victim.
“After taking him to their car, they left at full speed,” added Paulina Estevão.
Lusa contacted the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Manica, who have promised clarification today (Wednesday).
The abduction of Yassin Answar is the sixth on record in the country since the beginning of 2020.
On Thursday, another businessman of Indian origin was abducted in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo.
Rizwan Adatia, philanthropist and head of a large commercial concern, was driving in Matola’s Bairro do Fomento neighbourhood, when his car was blocked at a traffic light by kidnappers, who abducted him at gunpoint.
