The results of the Index of Economic Activities for April 2016 compared to the previous month reveals a 2.3 percent growth in the turnover index.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the increase in the General Index of Turnover in April reflects a rise in almost all sectors of economic activity except industry and transport, which have decreased 2.9 and 1.0 percent respectively.
An INE press release that Noticias has access to states that, compared to March, the tourism sector increased by 7.1 percent, energy by 6.9 percent, trade by 4.2 percent and other services by 0.3 percent.
In the same period, however, the employment index fell by 1.1 percent and wages by 1.4 percent.
“Tourism, which fell 4.6 percent, is the only sector which recorded a negative over the previous month. Industry did not register any variation. Trade, transport and other services have recorded increases of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.1 percent respectively,” the statement reads.
According to the INE, earnings in April fell 1.4 percent as a result of changes in various sectors. The industrial sector, with 9.1 percent, is the only one which recorded a positive change, while trade fell 2.0 percent, other services 3.4 percent, tourism 6.7 percent and transport 0.7 percent.
Compared with April 2015, global April 2016 indices increased by 8.5 percent on turnover, 5.1 percent on employment, while wages decreased 14.4 percent.
