Two brothers, both businessmen of Asian origin, kidnapped in Maputo earlier this month, are still in the hands of their captors, the spokesperson for the Maputo City Police Command, Orlando Mudumane, told reporters on Monday.
Abdul Satar was kidnapped on 6 September in front of his shop, on Zedequias Manganhela Avenue in downtown Maputo. His brother, Issufo Mahomed, was abducted last Thursday shortly after leaving his shop, on Filipe Samuel Magaia Avenue, also in central Maputo.
In the first kidnapping, according to a report in the independent daily “O Pais”, three criminals grabbed the victim. They fired shots into the air to disperse passers-by.
In the second case, Issufo was intercepted by six hooded gunmen, using two vehicles, and when one of Issufo’s workers tried to go to his employer’s assistance, he was attacked.
“It was all very quick”, said Issufo’s driver. Two cars were following Issufo as he left his shop, and “they intercepted our car. Four armed men jumped out of the cars. Two others stayed in the cars since they were the drivers. They dragged my employer into one of the cars”.
Mudumane said the police are working to rescue the two brothers, but would give no details for fear of disrupting the investigations. “It’s too soon to say anything”, he declared. “The police prefer secrecy during an investigation”.
