More than a thousand hectares of forest have been lost to uncontrolled fires in Bazaruto National Park, in Inhambane province.
Park administrator Ricardina Matusse said uncontrolled bushfires occur frequently during the preparation of fields for cultivation.
Matusse said authorities are trying to persuade the population to abandon the practice, which is unnecessarily destructive of the habitat.
