A 65-seater coach from Quelimane to Beira went off the road and turned over in Gorongosa district last Monday afternoon, killing three, including a two-year-old child and his mother.
The accident, involving a Nagi Investiments vehicle, took place on the Mucosa River about 20 kilometres from the village of Gorongosa, and resulted in injuries to 37 people some serious.
The injured were transported in a vehicle mobilised by the local authorities to Gorongosa health centre, where they are receiving medical treatment.
According to district administrator Manuel Jamaica, the accident may have been caused by speeding but, in the contact he had with authorities, the driver, Amisse Mussa, 48, blamed mechanical failure, which supposedly made it impossible to control the vehicle on the descent to the bridge.
However, passengers reported that the driver was driving too fast and ignored repeated requests from the passengers to slow down. The Gorongosa administrator coincidentally passed the bus travelling in the opposite direction an hour before the accident and reported that it was traveling at high speed then, too.
