British, Mozambican Ministers meet in London to discuss energy prospects for Mozambique

On Wednesday, 19 May 2021, UK Minister for Investment, Lord Grimstone of Boscobel Kt, held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique, Ernesto Max Elias Tonela, in London. The two Ministers discussed matters related to Mozambique’s promising energy sector as the country looks to capitalize on a clean growth transition.
The meeting also poised an opportunity to strengthen the UK-Mozambique strategic partnership in renewable energy, local content and a continued commitment towards achieving universal access to energy for all.

With total trade between the UK and Mozambique reaching £482M, an increase of 51.6% in the four quarters to the end of Q4 2020 when compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, the meeting further showcased both nations continuous efforts to work together to help drive sustainable economic development.
The UK offers significant expertise and capability across the renewable energy sector, including in green finance, energy storage, technical expertise and offshore wind. As the UK prepares to host COP26 in Glasgow next November, Lord Grimstone reassured Minister Tonela of the UK’s commitment to work with the Government of Mozambique to deliver on its vision of a clean energy transition.
UK investments in solar and wind offer both on-grid and off-grid solutions in Mozambique as the country prepares to diversify its economy. Expected gas revenues will play a crucial role to strengthen adaptive and resilience capacity to climate change, enhance energy access, while at the same time uplifting local communities to build an inclusive green economy. The two Ministers also discussed the security situation in northern Mozambique, with Lord Grimstone affirming the UK’s commitment to work with the Government of Mozambique to address the conflict and its underlying causes.
As Mozambique seeks to install an additional 400 Megawatts of solar PV and wind projects to the national grid in the next 10 years, the national electrification program, which aims to increase the number of households with access to reliable and affordable electricity, is expected to have a major impact on reducing deforestation and CO2 emissions from cooking and burning charcoal. The country’s transition to a stable energy source will facilitate the gradual penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar in the national energy grid.
This meeting comes as a follow-up from the UK-Mozambique Renewables Symposium virtually co-chaired by UK Minister of Exports, Rt. Hon. Graham Stuart and Mozambican Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy His Excellency Ernesto Max Elias Tonela in March this year.
