The British High Commission held, on July 15, a reception ceremony for Mozambican students who recently returned from the United Kingdom, after completing their Master’s courses under the prestigious Chevening scholarship program, season 2023/2024.
In all, there were nine students who completed training in various strategic areas, including Social and Public Policies, International Human Rights Law, Combating Terrorism and Insurgency, Public Health, Education and International Development, among other courses.
The event was attended by the Secretary of State for Science and Higher Education, Edson Macuácua, as well as representatives of the Mozambique Scholarship Institute (IBE) as well as scholarship students from previous years.
On the occasion, the British High Commissioner, Helen Lewis, highlighted that the United Kingdom sees education as one of the main catalysts for inclusive development and growth. The diplomat reinforced that the United Kingdom intervenes in the area of education and in addition to the Chevening scholarships, it also offers Commonwealth Scholarships and direct scholarships to British universities.
In turn, the Secretary of State for Science and Higher Education, Edson Macuácua, said:
“The expectation with your return is greater because it is expected that you can share and put into practice the knowledge acquired to respond to the challenges that the country faces, especially poverty, education and terrorism.”
Chevening is an international scholarship program of the British Government, funded by the Department of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs (FCDO), in partnership with several organizations. The fellowships are awarded to individuals with high leadership potential, commitment to development, and skills to promote positive change in their home countries.
The scholarship provides full financial support for Master’s degrees at British universities of excellence, providing recipients with access to high-quality education, unique exchange opportunities, and an immersion in the rich cultural diversity of the United Kingdom.
Since its creation, more than 350 Mozambicans have benefited from the Chevening Scholarship. In 2025, ten more Mozambican students will head to the UK to continue this legacy of academic excellence and international cooperation.
It should be noted that, in addition to the returning students honoured at the July 15 event, twelve Mozambican students are currently in the United Kingdom, with a return scheduled for 2026.
