A brigade from several Mozambican ministries has been meeting, since Monday, in the central Mozambican province of Manica to monitor the 2017- 2018 agricultural campaign.
The brigade will work for five days in several Manica districts, including Mossurize, Machaze and Báruè where they will discuss issues of food production, crop development and activities of the livestock sector.
The brigade on Monday visited the “Green Condominium” an area of 44 hectares destined to the production of crops such as maize, soya seed and beans. In addition to “Green Condominium”, the group visited an undertaking dedicated to milk production.
“Green Condominium” is an area reserved for members of the Manica provincial government, in which each government member has his own field. This was regarded as a way of promoting and encouraging the population to produce more food.
“We think this program brings good results to our population. Not only does it serve as an example to the community, but we have organised field days when we have been exchanging experiences with some peasant farmers from neighbouring areas, as a way of stimulating agricultural activity” declared Francisca Namahumbo, the Manica provincial director of Agriculture and Food Security.

According to Namahumbo, the initiative has been advantageous for local producers since “Green Condominium” has been practising mechanised agriculture using improved seeds.
“When the producers come to this place they appreciate the good appearance of the crops and we explain to them the importance of using machines and improved seeds. So they leave this place with some knowledge and this helps them increase their food production”, added Namahumbo, stressing that at the end of each season, they assess production and analyse the results of the campaign, in order to prepare for the future.
The head of the brigade, José Almoço, for his part, said that the work developed in the places visited is visible and the local. People are directly involved.
“What we saw pleases us a lot because there really is an interest in producing more food to fight hunger. We saw very fine experiences that can be replicated. Leaders should set an example to communities. When we said we have to produce food, we have to be a reference point. All of us regardless of our social position, have to bank on agriculture as the main weapon in the fight against poverty”.
In this year’s agricultural campaign, Manica is expected to produce over three million tonnes of assorted crops.
