Mozambique’s National Roads Administration (ANE) on Thursday closed the bridge over the Save River, which carries the main north-south highway (EN1) between the provinces of Inhambane and Sofala.
The ANE explained that the closure is to allow essential rehabilitation work to be undertaken on the bridge.
Until that work is completed, traffic across the river must use a provisional bridge erected nearby.
No vehicle using the provisional bridge should weigh more than 45 tonnes. There is a speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour on the provisional bridge, and it only has one lane.
Staff controlling the bridge will allow vehicles through in one direction, while those travelling in the opposite direction will wait on the other bank.
To ensure the safety of the users, says the ANE, no vehicles will be allowed to use the provisional bridge at night. Hence the bridge will be closed between 21.00 and 05.00.
A note from the ANE apologises for any inconvenience, and urges all users of the provisional bridge to respect the weight limits, and the signs controlling movement of vehicles.
The provisional bridge is about a kilometre long. It was inaugurated on Thursday by the Deputy Minister of Public Works, Cecilia Chamutota. During her visit she also inspected work on the rehabilitation of the old Save Bridge, and of the stretch of EN1 between Pambara in Inhambane and Muxungue in Sofala.
