Two people died and five others are believed to be missing of the about 30 passengers that were inside the Mapapai, a small boat that capsized this morning, after it hit ferry boat Mpfumo off the Katembe pier, reports Notícias. Adding Search and rescue operations are underway and boat transportation both ways has been suspended.
Until now, according to data provided by the authorities, 23 people were rescued, two of whom died. One person died on the site own and a child died on the way to hospital.
These are the first reports made available by the maritime authorities in relation to the accident, that reveal that, at the time of the accident, the ferry boat was carrying out docking maneuvers while the Mapapai was leaving the pier.
The accident took place at around 8a.m., a busy time for both sides of the bay of people heading to their work places.
As a result of the accident, the Maputo-Katembe is interrupted, a fact that has led to great concentration of people on one and the other side of the bay, according to Notícias.
The maritime police and firefighters immediately moved to the site to assist the victims. Searches are underway.
