The former chairman of Lam, former presidential candidate, a renowned Mozambican politician and lawyer, Carlos Jeque, was shot this morning by unidentified individuals in Maputo. He is hospitalized and reportedly out of danger.
According to reports by the television network Miramar, quoted by Folha de Maputo, the politician was shot in the leg and is still receiving medical care in a private hospital.
The aforementioned television network quoted a son of the former PCA of Mozambique Airlines (LAM), who said that he had no information of the causes that may have motivated the attack on his father.
Meanwhile, the General Command of Police in Maputo this morning claimed to have no information about the shooting.
The General Command of the PRM, through its spokesman, does not confirm the information about Carlos Jeque having been allegedly shot by unknown individuals, presumably at large.
According to Inacio Dina, until the moment of the usual weekly briefing of the General Command, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. today Tuesday, the police had no record of the event, so Dina said he preferred to wait for the final determination of the data.
The information circulating on social networks claims that Carlos Jeque was shot near the Portuguese School, a prime area of the city of Maputo. The same sources further indicate that his wounds are supposedly not life-threatening.
Carlos Jeque has a master’s degree in corporate law. He has served as director of the Internal Audit Department at the Bank of Mozambique. He was also an independent candidate for president in the first multiparty elections in 1994.
The last public position held by Carlos Jeque was as chairman of the Mozambique Airlines (LAM).
