Mozambique: Residents block main road in Chongoene district, Gaza province
Canalmoz / Rufino Licuco
The Judicial Court of Maputo City has just handed Rufino Licuco a three years and four months prison sentence. He has also been sentenced to pay Josina Machel a compensation of 200 million meticals ( around US$2,866,000) for non-patrimonial damages and 579 thousand meticais (around US$8,297) for property damage, Canalmoz reports.
However, the court applied the alternative measures to imprisonment, suspending for a period of five years the three years and four months sentence, provided that the defendant payes the compensation within 30 days.
Licuco has thirty days to pay the amount. If fails to do so, he must go to jail.
For the Court, Rufino Licuco is to blame for the damage done to Josina Machel’s eye, which culminated in loss of vision in a case typified as domestic violence.
The defense team says it will appeal the sentence.
Last Saturday afternoon Graça Machel had already announced that today at 14 she would give a press conference to react on the case and the sentence.
According to the same source, a South African court found no evidence to decide when Josina Machel reportedly filed a complaint requiring state protection under the South African Domestic Violence Act.
The Maputo Court sentenced Josina Machel to pay Rufino Licuco for the costs incurred in the proceedings in South Africa.
