About 30 employees of the Company Mozambican Tuna, Ematum, mostly sailors protested today ouside the company’s head office in Maputo to pressure the institution to pay two months wage arrears. Workers say they are aghast because unpaid salaries recur and have been paid on the wake of “confusions”.
“We are here to claim the unpaid salary. It has always been so, when delaying the salary, we have to create a mess and right after some noise the salary comes out, «” said one. “We are worried. We want to know why do we always have to make a noise to be paid. And now they are trying to make it official, this thing of receiving [salaries] every two months. But this way we are not able to manage earnings. We are already without pay for two months,” another said, not wishing to be identified.
The group says it fears the company may close, given the fact that 24 boats do not work since December last year. “The company itself is stopped for a year. It is not doing anything. We are concerned because we would like someone to show up to say why is the company stopped. “
“I’m not working because my contract is maritime. It is in the sea that I should be working and not here on land to man the 24 boats standing there,” blurted one of the sailors.
At the time, our news team sought to hear Ematum about the reasons for the strike, but it was not possible. The reporting team was not allowed.
Ematum, which benefited for its operations of US$350 million contracted by the Government with state sovereign guarantees is one of the companies covered by the international and independent audit to clarify the hidden debts.
