Major routes affected included the N12‚ which was closed‚ the N1 south and north and roads leading in and out of Eldorado Park.
Rocks‚ burning tyres and reports of shooting in a service delivery protest caused early morning chaos for commuters around Eldorado Park [Freedom Park, south of Johannesburg] in Johannesburg on Monday.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesman Wayne Minnaar said it was not safe for motorists in the area.
Speaking on radio 702 www.702.co.za he said the protests were “service delivery related”. Police reinforcements were sent to the area.
This is a developing story.
It’s not yet clear what residents are protesting about but motorists have been warned to avoid the area.
