The president of the Mozambican Association of Bakers (AMOPÃO), Victor Miguel, said that the price of bread went up two months ago, but without any official announcement, in order to avoid social unrest. The price increased to amounts ranging from 12.00 to 15.00 meticais.
In statements to CanalMoz on Monday, Victor Miguel said that the rise in the price of bread was deliberately kept quiet to avoid demonstrations about the cost of living.
‘A government guideline’
According to Victor Miguel, the increase has been taking place since March but there was a government guideline for the issue not to be exposed in the press, so as not to agitate the population.
“When we bring this to light, people who can afford to buy bread will not have any problems, but we will agitate the population, while the price of bread started rising in March. People are already buying bread. with new prices in several bakeries,” he said.
The president of the Mozambican Association of Bakers added that the increase in bread prices was not simultaneous in all points of sale.
“Some went up at the beginning of the month and others went up much earlier,” he explained. He also said that each bakery decided to increase prices according to its operational relationship.
And he insists that any attempt to make this phenomenon public could lead to social instability. “You know that bread is like transport; if they go on strike or don’t run, people are the ones who suffer.”
Victor Miguel stated that this silence is intentional and is already known to some media outlets. “The press has already been approached several times. People understood. The same with television.”
