Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has told his Mozambican counterpart, Maria Manuela Lucas, that he hopes Mozambique will participate in the first high-level meeting under the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, to be held in Brazil in May, 2025, and focused on increasing agricultural productivity, with the involvement of African agriculture ministers.
According to a note from Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (commonly known as ‘Itamaraty’, after the building housing it) the two diplomatic leaders spoke by telephone on Tuesday, with Mauro Vieira reinforcing the “invitation for Mozambique to participate in the II Brazil-Africa Dialogue on Food Security, Fight Against Hunger and Rural Development”, which will be held in the Brazilian capital between May 20 and 22.
This May meeting follows the creation of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, launched at the 2024 G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18, 2024. Brazil will host a meeting with African agriculture ministers in May, 2025 – the first high-level gathering of the alliance.
During the conversation, the Brazilian foreign minister “congratulated the Mozambican government on its efforts to promote national stability and find solutions to the country’s challenges”.
Mauro Vieira was referring the meeting between the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, and former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who led the protests against the results of last October’s elections.
During that meeting, Mondlane agreed to suspend the protests, given the progress made in talks between Chapo, political parties and civil society, which culminated in an agreement that provides for changes to the constitution and the political, judicial and electoral systems.
