The Brazilian government has “strongly condemned the terrorist attacks” in the Mozambican region of Cabo Delgado and expressed solidarity with the people and government of Mozambique, according to a statement released on Monday.
“The Brazilian Government deplores and strongly condemns the terrorist attacks that occurred in the extreme north of Mozambique, in the province of Cabo Delgado, in the last few weeks, which have victimised dozens of citizens of that region. In expressing condolences to the families of the victims, the Brazilian Government expresses solidarity to the people and Government of Mozambique, a country with which we share strong and historical cultural and linguistic ties,” Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Brazil also reaffirmed “its firm repudiation of any and all forms of terrorism, regardless of their motivation”, and reiterated its “determination to work with all international partners to eradicate this scourge”.

The province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of Mozambique, has been the target of attacks by armed groups for three years, some of them claimed by the Islamic State ‘jihadist’ group, but whose origin remains a matter of debate, causing a humanitarian crisis with around 2,000 deaths and 435,000 internally displaced.
Several national and international figures have commented recently on the growing attacks and violence in the province of Cabo Delgado, and reports of beheadings.
Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday expressed “shock over the reports of massacres by non-state armed groups in several villages, including reported mass-beheadings and the kidnapping of women and children”.
