A 20-year-old Australian citizen identified as Elly Warren was found dead on Wednesday morning in Tofo Beach in Inhambane province.
A Verdade learned that Elly travelled to Mozambique alone about six weeks ago to participate in a marine life research volunteer program that run by the Marine Megafauna Foundation, based at Tofo Beach.
During the research program, the young woman was staying in a popular diving resort called Casa Barry until last Tuesday (8 November). A source from the resort said that Elly intended staying a few more days in the popular tourist destination for diving in South Mozambique before returning home, and had booked accommodation in the Wuyani Pari Yango resort about 1 kilometre away.
As far as it has been possible to ascertain, the young Australian checked in at the Wuyani Pari Yango, an accommodation for backpackers, where she left some personal belongings. At the end of the afternoon she left the tourist office in the company of some acquaintances and was seen enjoying herself having a drink in a local market.
A witness told A Verdade that Elly left the market shop and went to the residence of a local acquaintance where she stayed for a few hours before returning to the market for some time and leaving the place alone.
Around 5:00 AM on Wednesday (November 9) Elly’s body was found near a busy public toilet by fishermen, who alerted the police.
Eyewitnesses have told A Verdade that the body of the deceased showed no apparent signs of violence.
Inhambane police inspector Juma Dauto told the newspaper that the girl’s body had been transferred to the city of Maputo for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
