The bodies of three Mozambican Covid-19 victims have crossed the border at Ressano Garcia since coronavirus-related social confinement and states of emergency came into force.
The three bodies came from South Africa and Asia, TVM reports, without giving further details.
The head of the Ressano Garcia border crossing point said that the bodies had been repatriated for funerals in their Mozambican areas of origin.
Official data this Saturday indicated that South Africa had a cumulative total 264,184 Covid-19 cases and 3,971 deaths from coronavirus.
Positive cases included three provincial governors – of Gauteng and the Western Cape, and also North West, the country’s largest platinum mining region, which employs more than 5,000 Mozambican miners.
Sources from the South African Mining Council say more than 400 miners in South Africa, including Mozambicans, are infected with the coronavirus.
Following the AngloGold Ashanti Miners who returned to South Africa last week, workers from the company Harmony Gold, who had also returned to Mozambique prior to the lockdown in South Africa, will cross at Ressano this Monday.
The miners are happy to get back to work, but apprehensive about the Covid-19 situation in South Africa.
After their documentation and employment contracts have been processed, the miners will undergo a 14-day quarantine in South Africa before resuming work activities.
The border between Mozambique and South Africa remains closed, except for freight trucks and other essential goods.
