EUMAM MOZ conducts internal medical evacuation drill
The mayor of Quelimane, Zambezia province, Manuel de Araújo, said yesterday that three more bodies had been retrieved from the Chipaca River, victims of the sinking of a vessel carrying an undetermined number of passengers.
The three, two women of 22 and 28 years and a 12-year-old child, bring to four the number of confirmed deaths from the sinking on Saturday of a boat ferrying passengers between Quelimane and Madal.
Speaking to Lusa from Quelimane, the mayor said that “around five to 10 people are missing”, adding however that “so far, we do not know exactly how many wore on board”.
Mozambican police spokesman for Zambezia province Miguel Cândido told Lusa that the incident occurred around 07:00 AM on Saturday, when the overcrowded boat hit the structure of the bridge over the Chipaca River.
According to Radio de Moçambique, the boat was carrying more than 20 people. Only four passengers were rescued alive, one of whom died later in the Issídua health center, where the victim had been evacuated.
