One person died and three are reported missing as a result of a maritime accident last week in Angoche district, Nampula province. According to the provincial police command, 16 fisherfolk were on board the boat, of whom only twelve survived.
This incident occurred last Wednesday, in the maritime channel of Thamole, a coastal district of Angoche, when the fishing vessel hit a sandbank.
“The Lake and River Police are continuing to search for the missing fisherfolk,” Zacarias Nacute, the Mozambican police spokesman in Nampula, said.
Also last week, a child drowned in the Meluli River in Rapale district because of being unable to swim. “The police went to the scene and delivered the body to the relatives for burial,” Nacute said.
Every week, the police report cases of people drowning as a result of being unable to swim, especially in coastal areas, and regularly call for safety rules to be observed as a way of avoiding this and the subsequent mourning it imposes on families.
Road accidents continue to kill in Nampula
Two road accidents were reported during the week. The first one, which caused the death of a man, occurred on National Highway Number 115 in Mossuril district, and was caused by speeding.
“The second case occurred in the district of Monapo, was caused by irregular overtaking, and resulted in injury to three citizens,” Nacute said, giving assurances that police were and would continue to urge motorists to observe the road code so as to prevent bloodshed on the roads of Nampula.
