Former president Armando Guebuza says that the biggest challenge facing Mozambique is ending the political and military instability in the country.
Speaking on Sunday at a ceremony commemorating the building of the Methodist church in the Mavalane neighbourhood, the former head of state urged all Mozambicans and civic leaders to support President Filipe Nyusi in the struggle for peace in the country.
“We feel that it is the duty of all Mozambican and all civic leaders to continually increase their support for our president and his government in their struggle to achieve true and lasting peace, and in their commitment to the welfare of all Mozambicans,” Guebuza said.
Alberto Chipande, head of Frelimo in Sofala province, likewise expressed his optimism that the return of the international mediators in August would hasten the achievement of effective peace.
Chipande was speaking in Beira on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the seventh ordinary session of the Sofala provincial Frelimo committee.
“To Mozambicans, hope; hope that something positive will come out of this process. Everything has its beginning and everything has its end. And that the mediators come here, the people want peace and do not want war; this is the first point to be addressed.”
Chipande reported the international mediators as saying that the next meetings between the government and Renamo would produce positive results, justifying Mozambicans’ hope for an effective peace in the country.
