Mozambique: 100 hectares of crops submerged in Limpopo
The approach of the coconut harvest is raising the spirits of sellers and consumers alike in Zimpeto Wholesale Market, where the price of coconut is relatively stable.
António Lourenço sells in average 4,000 coconuts a day, an ingredient almost indispensable in the cooking of many a Mozambican family meal. He says the price will tend to fall.
He began selling coconuts in the 1980s, and the business has allowed him to raise his children and given him a prosperous life.
Rijal Mussagy says Cyclone Dineo, which hit Inhambane, made coconut more expensive, but a new harvest is on the doorstep.
Consumers still complain that the price is high, but Dona Erondina da Conceição says she cannot do without coconut in her delicacies.
