The third All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) was long, ending only in the early hours of Monday. Three Mozambican names were on the list of nominees: Jimmy Dludlu, Moreira Chonguiça and Lizha James ( shortlisted for Best Female Artist in Southern Africa award with ‘Chocolate’) and Mr Bow (shortlisted for African Fans Favourite with ‘Vida Boa’). Clearly, it would have been of great satisfaction if everyone had won, but the fact that one of our own has brought the statuette back to Mozambique is praise enough. That person is Jimmy Dludlu, and the song that clinched the award is “Ha Deva” from his latest album, “In the Groove”.
There could be no better news for the Chamanculo guitarist from the Maputo neighbourhood that forged so many talents. Although he represented South Africa, his second home, the fact that his song recalls the celebrated composition of the late Machaeiei is already a good sign. Moreover, the new version sees the participation of the composer’s nephew, Nomo, doubly honouring the talent of the late Mozambican musician.
Jimmy pipped to the podium Moreira Chonguiça, who competed with the song “Ngoma”, captured during the recording of the fourth More Jazz Series album ‘Moreira Chonguiça live at Polana Serena Hotel, Maputo, Mozambique’. Other African jazz greats in the running included Bokani Dyer, from South Africa; Carmen Souza, from Cape Verde; Kunle Ayo from Nigeria (last year’s winner ); Oum of Morrocco and Ray Lema of the Central African Republic.
