Benin’s Angelique Kidjo wins 3rd World Music Grammy award

Benin and African superstar Angelique Kidjo won her third “Best World Music Album” Grammy Award for her album Sings at the 58th Grammy Awards. U.S rap sensation Kendrick Lamar also had a fantastic night bagging five awards, including Best Rap Album and Best Music Video.
Beninese and African superstar Angelique Kidjo has won her third “Best World Music Album” Grammy Award for her album Sings, a collaboration with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, conducted by Gast Waltzing.
At the 58th Grammy awards, Kidjo was competing against Malawi’s Zomba Prison Project, Brazilian superstar, Gilberto Gil, South African Ladysmith Black Mambazo and India’s Anoushka Shankar.
Celebrating her award, Kidjo wrote on Facebook: “I want to dedicate this Grammy to all the traditional musicians in Africa, in my country, and all the young generation, the new African music, vibrant, joyful music that comes from my continent that you have to get yourself to discover. Africa is on the rise. Africa is positive. Africa is joyful. Let’s get together and be one through music and say no to hate and violence through music. Thank you”.
The 55-year-old artist has now won the award for the second year running, after picking up the award in the same category last year for her album Eve.
The 11 track album features songs such as ‘Malaika, Samba Pa Ti, Kelele and among Petite Fleur others.
Meanwhile, U.S rap sensation Kendrick Lamar had a fantastic night bagging five awards — including Best Rap Album and Best Music Video. The rapper put the icing on the cake with a stellar stage performance which left people clamouring for more.
