Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi this Wednesday expressed condolences to Pope Francis on the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, highlighting the “humility that always characterised him”.
“His resignation, for health reasons, was a true testimony of the humility which always characterised him,” President Nyusi says in a note from the Presidency of the Republic shared with the media.
The Mozambican head of state also addressed “heartfelt condolences” to the “Catholic Church, Christians around the world and the bereaved family”, noting that “during his pilgrimage” Benedict XVI proved to be “a true Christian”, who cultivated the virtues of peace and reconciliation in the faithful.
“We are on your side at this difficult time, and pray that the teachings left by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI be transmitted to future generations,” the President writes.
Benedict XVI’s funeral, presided over by Pope Francis, took place in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square, starting at 9:30 a.m. local time this Thursday.
Benedict XVI died on Saturday 31st December, 2022, in the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican, where he lived after resigning from the papacy in 2013.
