On Wednesday, 2nd December 2020, Beluluane Industrial Park (BIP) hosted the fourth graduation ceremony for the Beluluane-Joba Internship Programme funded by UKAid and facilitated by the Beluluane Industrial Park. The event was officiated by the Secretary of State for Youth and Employment, Oswaldo Petersburgo.
The Beluluane-Joba Internship Programme was launched in 2018 with the aim of connecting qualified young Mozambicans to employers. The programme helps companies identify, train and recruit employees. Interns receive work-readiness training before they start working in practical internships. The soft-skills training covers work ethics, communication and health and safety.
Since 2018, 511 young Mozambicans have participated in the programme, of which 39% were women. The interns have been placed in 67 companies, inside and outside BIP, which have supported the professional training of these young people.
The Secretary of State for Youth and Employment, Oswaldo Petersburgo, officiated the fourth graduation ceremony. He praised the work of the Beluluane-Joba Programme, stressing the importance of creating professional internship vacancies, as these opportunities greatly increase the chances of young graduates being able to secure permanent employment. This is supported by the latest employability rate published by Beluluane-Joba, which shows that over 70% of interns who graduated from the programme have secured permanent employment or are self-employed.
Present at the event, the Governor of Maputo Province, Júlio Parruque, pointed out that 40% of the Maputo Province population are young people, which shows the importance of initiatives as the Beluluane-Joba internship programme for the future of these young Mozambicans. He also stressed the government’s commitment to job creation “The provincial government will continue to work with partners to promote more employment opportunities as a way of reducing the levels of poverty of the young population.”
The ceremony also featured a speech by Marcia Boaventura, who was an intern for 6 months at the company Afrox. Ms. Boaventura said that the company had shown a lot of commitment to her by sharing knowledge and through the professional training that they delivered. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by the Beluluane-Joba internship programme and for all the learning and knowledge acquired.
Regarding the future of the programme, the General Manager of BIP, Onorio Boane, announced an important development regarding the name of the programme, which will now be called Mimi Niko Kazi, which translates to ‘I am working’ in Swahili. Since 2018 the Internship Programme had been funded by UKAid. From 2021, the programme will have new funding, a new brand and will expand beyond Maputo Province to admit interns and employers from all parts of Mozambique. Beluluane Industrial Park will continue to manage the programme as part of its commitment to creating employment opportunities for young Mozambicans.
Beluluane Industrial Park is open for new partnerships to support the continuation of this internship programme.
