Staff from the National Institute of the Sea were expected to arrive in Beira this Wednesday to start an investigation into the causes of a collision between two ships in the Port of Beira, Sofala province.
The inspectors will start work tomorrow, ‘Noticias’ has learned, but the date of the announcement of the results of the investigation is still to be determined.
After the investigation, the vessels will be moved to a dock for repairs prior to return to service.
The two ships collided early in the morning, ostensibly due to poor visibility resulting from the thick fog registered at the time.
A source close to Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM) confirmed that the institution’s Board of Directors team was working late on the matter, and promising to provide more details today.
This is the second recent maritime collision at the Port of Beira allegedly caused by fog. The first involved the largest oceanic dredger in the country, the Macuti, and a Panama-flagged cargo vessel.
