The Mozambican Council of Religions (Corem) is promoting a two-day national meeting to find solutions to post-electoral conflict in Mozambique. The National Summit on Peace and Reconciliation takes place in the city of Beira, central Mozambique.
The meeting is taking place as the country prepares for local elections in October and shortly before general elections next year. The Peace and Reconciliation Summit brings together Mozambican and international experts in the Sofala province capital.
Between 2015 and 2016, Mozambique witnessed an escalation in clashes between government forces and the armed wing of the largest opposition party, the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), which did not accept the 2014 election results, accusing the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), the ruling party, of fraud.
Later, in December 2016, a cease-fire was declared by Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama and relations with Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi improved.
Negotiations for a new peace agreement were marked by a handshake between the two on Aug 6th, 2017, when Nyusi went to Gorongosa for a two-hour meeting with Dhlakama.
Last year, the head of state said that a consensus document issuing from the negotiations with Renamo would be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic soon.
