Antonio Pinto, owner of the Clinica Sorridente (Smiling) private health clinic in Beira city, confirmed the facility’s possession of a table and two surgery beds mentioned in connection with donated equipment missing from Beira Hospital, but said the equipment was donated by the Rotary Club of Beira, Notícias reports.
The president of the Rotary Club of Beira, Andrew Jennings confirmed to Notícias that the equipment in the private Clinic was donated by his charity during the mandate of his predecessor, Wayne Allsopp, who in turn has also confirmed and said he was available to provide evidence of the donation.
On Monday, the directors of Beira’s Central Hospital told the provincial governor of Sofala that 70 percent of the material donated by the Rotary Club of Australia had been diverted to the Sorridente without giving details. The hospital’s managers were speaking during a public hearing promoted by Governor Taipo after receiving complaints from Rotarians who had found, on a monitoring visit, that the equipment was not in the hospital.
A source said the Rotary Club of Beira now wanted to know where the contents of two containers of medical equipment worth US$2 million given to the HCB in 2014 and 2015 were.
“HCB have to tell us where this equipment is, but Director General Augusto Macome is pointing to the Clinica Sorridente [Smiling Clinic]. But we donated equipment to the HCB. We are not accusing anyone. We have been asking for an explanation since October last year,” Jennings said.
Notícias continues to report a source in Beira’s Central Hospital as saying that, from the medical equipment donated by Rotary to HCB, an operating table and other materials. which should be traceable, have disappeared.
Meanwhile, the provincial government regards the entire hospital management, particularly the director, Augusto Macome, as responsible for the scandal, and has called for exemplary punishment. Meanwhile Taipo has demanded that all the stolen material be returned to the hospital.
