Maputo will receive EUR 150,000 support from the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona to improve urban mobility and transportation in the Mozambican capital, Mayor David Simango said on Friday (31 September).
“The memorandum we signed will provide EUR 150,000 to implement this project and support the inauguration of the metropolitan agency” dedicated to the sector, the mayor said.
The amount will help put into operation the Metropolitan Transportation Agency, which includes Maputo, Matola, Boane and Marracuene, and which, although formally instituted, has not yet begun to operate.
The president of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, Alfred Bosch, said that Barcelona would also support Maputo in the management of solid waste and water supply.
“We will offer the best tools we have in Barcelona” and point out “the mistakes we have made, so that Maputo may not repeat them”, Bosch said.
The two cities signed a ten-year cooperation agreement that has trained more than 300 people in management over the last decade. Thirty libraries have been set up, the territorial reorganisation of some areas of the city was defined with the support of Architects Without Borders, and the sanitary conditions of 68 markets were improved with the support of the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.
A municipal medicine warehouse was also built within the framework of the cooperative relationship.
