The Bank of Mozambique (BM) and Inhambane Municipal Council on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding on the laying out of a ‘Praça do Metical’ [‘Metical Square’] in the city, the central bank announced in a statement on Friday.
Bank of Mozambique governor Rogério Zandamela says in a statement that the new square will “enhance the architectural and urban beauty of the city of Inhambane, through a comfortable leisure space with historical significance for residents”.
The initiative is one of a number of projects carried out by the bank countrywide which aim at contributing to “the dignification of one of the most important symbols of the country’s economic stability” – the national currency.
On the occasion of the signing, Mayor of Inhambane Benedito Eduardo Guimino said that the Metical Square would boost tourism and challenge the city and its inhabitants to help preserve the metical.
“We commit to taking care of the infrastructure with great love, care and responsibility. All phases of its construction will be keenly followed, as it is a prestigious and imposing work celebrating the history and culture of Manhambanas in particular,” he said.
The construction of the Praça do Metical will see 60 families resettled in the Guitambatuno neighbourhood, where access roads and parcelled land with drinking water and electricity are being implemented, and a new municipal abattoir is being built to replace the old one.
Guimino said that this follow-up would require a lot of dedication and commitment from the central bank and municipal council, in order to guarantee basic conditions for the families involved.
One of the municipal council’s main concerns was to open a new chapter in the lives of people living without proper sanitation in the Chalambe neighbourhood, which rendered them vulnerable to pandemics, especially Covid-19.
Guimino reaffirmed the commitment of his executive to continue actively collaborating in the implementation of subsequent steps in order to foster a healthy environment and good health among the citizens of the new ‘Land of Good People’ [‘Terra da Boa Gente’].
Bank of Mozambique Governor Rogério Zandamela said that the Praça do Metical would provide leisure space for Inhambane residents and visitors alike, as well as boosting the historical and cultural standing of the symbol of the country’s financial economy.
The resettlement of the families in the area and relocation of the municipal abattoir building to make space was a sensitive act of great social responsibility for the Bank of Mozambique and the municipal council, Zandamela said, because, in addition to improving human lives, it would enhance the tourist environment and highlight the national currency.
The initiative also aims to ensure that current and future generations have an example of how history should be preserved, the central bank’s statement concludes.
