The Governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Rogério Zandamela, said yesterday that he considered Mozambique’s tourism revenues were below their true potential.
“Currently, our balance of payments data indicates tourism revenues of US$151 million, a figure clearly below the country’s real potential,” Zandamela said during the signing of a protocol for sharing tourism sector statistical information between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the central bank.
While last year’s US$151 million in tourism revenue represents an increase of 39.6 percent over the previous year, the central bank governor feels the country needs to increase tourism revenues, taking into account the “gigantic potential” that the country has.
“We hope that the implementation of this protocol will bring significant improvements in this framework,” he said. “The protocol represents an important step towards improving the statistical information reported in the balance of payments.”
