The Bank of Mozambique yesterday issued an alert correcting information circulating on social networks and the Internet representing as new money a set of metical notes that have already gone out of circulation.
The images released “on social networks, especially WhatsApp”, come a few days before the release of the new notes, scheduled for June 16.
Internet messages show a family of metical bearing the inscription Republica de Moçambique instead of the Banco de Moçambique, which had “ended their legal course on December 31, 2012”, the bank explains.
The 2017 metical notes will circulate alongside 2006 and 2011 notes, the statement adds, and guidelines “will be issued days before” the new series’ entry into circulation.
The bank also clarified that there would be no exchange process or circulation deadline for the 2006 and 2011 series notes.
