At least 10 people were killed by lightning and some 1,700 families have been affected by heavy rainfall over the past six months in Nampula province.
According to data provided by the provincial representative of the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC), Virgínia Malauene, the families affected had lost mostly informal dwellings to the bad weather.
Angoche, Mozambique Island, Mossuril, Mogovolas and Nacala-Porto were hardest hit by rains and other inclement weather since last October, but swift government intervention has largely restored the living conditions of those affected.
There is still a need to rebuild public infrastructure destroyed by bad weather in the province, and INGC teams are currently working in the most affected districts to determine what interventions are needed to bring public institutions back up to full functionality.
“We are working to repair the damage caused by bad weather during the rainy season in the most affected regions of Nampula province. The government has funds, although reduced, to meet the needs in terms of procurement of materials and labour,” Malauene said.
The rainy season in the province for the most part corresponded to the National Institute of Meteorology’s seasonal forecast, with normal rainfall in some places and below normal in others. Some roads vital for facilitating food distribution and economic activity in general have been damaged, but repair work is under way, with more scheduled for subsequent phases.
