Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Saturday urged the country’s poultry producers to work towards national self-sufficiency in chickens.
He was speaking during a visit to a large poultry undertaking, the Aviario Paula, in the Samora Machel neighbourhood on the outskirts of the western city of Tete.
Nyusi noted that, although it is not easy to breed poultry in Tete, due to the high temperatures prevalent in this province, Aviario Paula has been making efforts to supply the local market with Mozambican chickens.
This poultry company has been in business since 1988. It started with just one pavilion, with the capacity to hold 2,500 chickens. But today it has ten pavilions, and the newest can hold 11,000 chickens.
The company has its own semi-automatic slaughterhouse, with the capacity to slaughter 2,000 birds a day. Every month, the company produces an average of 44,000 chickens. It employs about 80 workers.
Paula Carvalho, co-manager of the company, told AIM that this year the plan is to increase production to 64,000 chickens a month. She says the company intends to build a further two poultry pavilions, install a factory to produce chicken feed, and an egg incubator.
Nyusi praised Aviario Paula, for its ability to overcome day-to-day difficulties, and to survive and grow. He also expressed his gratitude to the people of Tete for their commitment to hard work.
