The Maputo-KaTembe bridge access viaduct which provides access to the Avenida da Organização das Nações Unidas [avenida da ONU] in Maputo, has just been closed due to cracks which compromise the safety of users and jeopardize the structure. A fence has been set up with signage indicating ongoing construction works.
A source from the bridge concessionaire, Rede Viária de Moçambique (REVIMO), said that the closure was due to a landslide caused by works carried out by a private company which led to the partial collapse of one of the pillars.
The REVIMO source noted that the problem has already been identified and actions are underway to resolve it.
According to the same source, access was closed as a precaution and traffic was redirected to other access viaducts.
The restrictions could last for three months, during which time corrective work will be carried out.
