Mozambique: John Kachamila dies at 79
The Mozambican authorities on Friday accused Renamo, the largest opposition party, of murdering the traditional chief of Chibabava, who was shot dead at his home in Sofala province on Thursday night.
Governor of Sofala Helena Taipo said that the crime took place just metres from the house of the father of Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, who is from Chibabava.
Police in Sofala also attribute the murder to armed opposition fighters and say that the authorities are in pursuit of the suspects.
The death of the traditional chief takes place at a time when the government and Renamo have resumed peace negotiations in Maputo with the assistance of international mediators.
Speaking for Zambezia province on Thursday, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi called for an immediate end to military confrontations.
“What Mozambicans want is the immediate cessation of the killing and destruction of property,” Nyusi said, speaking at a rally in Mopeia in the centre of the country.
