The U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), committed on October 10th an additional $59.2 million in assistance to Mozambique to support current and future programs for people affected by Cyclone Idai and Cyclone Kenneth. This funding will also provide aid to Mozambican communities affected by floods and drought, with the goal of reducing the risks associated with extreme weather events. U.S. Government partners that will implement programs utilising this funding include World Vision, CARE and UNICEF, among others. This brings the U.S. Government contribution to recovery efforts to $166.8 million. This support is in addition to the nearly $500 million in annual development assistance that the United States gives to the Government and people of Mozambique.
The U.S. Mission to Mozambique coordinates with the Government of the Republic of Mozambique, private sector partners, and nongovernmental organisations to develop agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and water sanitation and hygiene projects in the communities most affected by these natural disasters. In addition to meeting the immediate needs of affected communities, this support is part of the U.S. Government’s broader effort to mitigate the impact of future natural disasters and strengthen the resilience of communities in Mozambique.
Listen to the audio message by Ambassador Dennis Hearne (in Portuguese):
USAID leads the U.S. Government’s international development and disaster assistance in Mozambique through partnerships and investments that save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen democratic governance, and help people emerge from humanitarian crises.
